Each year huge schools of Herring converge on the beaches of Vancouver Island to spawn. The abundance of food attracts thousands of Bald Eagles, Herons and Gulls as well as marine animals such as California Sea Lions on top of our resident populations of Steller Sea Lions and Harbour Seals.
The spawn colours the water resembling the colours of the Caribbean. All the seaweed along the shore is covered in Herring roe despite the heavy predation and human harvesting.
